6th Creek Catchment

The place we refer to as the 6th Creek catchment is 6607 hectares of land in the Central Hills region of the Mt Lofty Ranges which supports a variety of land uses including orchards, vineyards, grazing, residential areas and native vegetation.

The catchment is considered unique as it has the Central Adelaide Hills only permanent creek and more than 40% of the original native vegetation remaining, compared with an average 7% for the entire Mount Lofty Ranges (this is mainly due to the steep and inaccessible nature of the terrain). A number of nationally threatened animal and plant species have been found in the catchment from biological surveys and through our on ground activities.

Local people benefit from the local environment in many ways including making a livelihood from the fertile soils and high rainfall or simply enjoying the rural living of the Hills. This catchment is also important to Adelaide residents as Sixth Creek runs into the River Torrens at Castambul which provides the city with drinking water.

Through wise land management and thoughtful use of our natural environment, we can work towards a sustainable future and continue to enjoy the benefits of living and working in this productive and beautiful area.
